Five artists to watch at îleSoniq 2016

Aside from headliners Zedd and Skrillex, there may not necessarily be a whole lot that jumps out to the casual EDM listener about this year’s îleSoniq lineup. Luckily for those people, there’s plenty worth checking out, as a number of producers making their way to Montreal this weekend are making major waves both in that world and outside it. Here are five artists we think are ones to watch for îleSoniq this year.

Signed to EDM mega-label Mad Decent, this LA-via-Connecticut producer has seen himself be quite busy these days, as he’s collaborated with Dillon Francis and Flux Pavilion aside from dropping huge track after huge track on SoundCloud. This trap producer may still be working his way up the electronic food chain, but based on his musical output, he clearly has no problem setting a party ablaze.

A cosign from Skrillex – one of this year’s headliner – can take you a very, very long way. One of many EDM producers these days who seem to be championing the future bass sound, his career got a boost early on from Skrillex reposting one of his songs on his SoundCloud account, and this masked man is coming to îleSoniq off the back of his debut album Joytime released back in January. Although his name, hometown and physical appearance aren’t known, his heavy-hitting trap beats are definitely worth noticing.

The Chainsmokers

Although it may be hard for some to take these guys seriously after that “#Selfie” song from a couple years back, the Chainsmokers have managed to establish themselves as being far, far more than that. With their style more or less eschewing the satirical yet very cookie cutter fist-pumping EDM for a more future bass style, they’ve accumulated major pop hits within the past year or so with “Roses”, “Don’t Let Me Down” and most recently with “Closer”, a collaboration with Halsey.

Friday August 5, Scène Oasis Fido, 8 p.m.

Being a former resident of Montreal and landing himself a coveted spot on HW&W Recordings’ list of signees, this producer born David Pimentel from Port Moody, BC is currently based in Vancouver, and has seen his career flourish in a number of ways: he’s earne him a spot opening for Disclosure, he produced Mac Miller’s new single “Dang!”, and he’s won a Juno. If there’s any justice, he’ll be welcomed back to Montreal with open arms.

Saturday August 6, Scène Neon, 4 p.m.

Jai Wolf

Born Sajeeb Saha, this producer also managed to make his entrance into the EDM world partially through a Skrillex cosign, as Sonny Moore released Wolf’s remix of his track “Ease My Mind” on his own label, and opened his show at Madison Square Garden with it. With multiple major festival appearances under his belt such as Coachella and Bonnaroo, he’ll be taking the stage at îleSoniq with his ODESZA-esque electronic style.
